For the next 40 days, I hope you will take this The Purpose Driven® journey with me. I invite you to read one chapter each day and then join me to share you response to the end of the chapter question here.
I realize we may be working at a different pace or you may be joining me at a different time, it doesn’t matter, wherever you are at, there is something that each of us can gain by interacting with the book and each other.
Make sure you read the introductory section – don’t skip it. Then, I encourage you to go beyond simply reading this book. Absorb it; reflect on it throughout the day (that’s why it’s important to only read one chapter per day); mark it up; take notes and respond to it.
In addition to my answer to the daily question, I’ll be sharing the verse for the day (in both the book’s version and King James) and my favorite quotes. Feel free to share your favorites in the comments section as well.
I pray that we will all be blessed by this 40-day experience.
Day 1:
It’s not about me
“Everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.” Colossians 1:16b (Msg)
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him” Colossians 1:16 (KJV)
Question to consider:
In spite of all the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really about living for God, not myself?
Despite all that’s going on around me, I can remind myself that it’s not about me, but about living for God, by making a conscious effort to not just read scriptures, but try to remember them; to bury them in my heart. I can set reminders throughout the day to take a moment to ponder and remember a verse. For the next 40 days, I’ll use the focus verse of the day.
I can also help myself to remember by continually working to develop my relationship with God – that means I need to talk to Him throughout the day, not just in the morning or at night. I need to really turn to Him and bring my worries to Him.
If I can do that, it’ll become easier and easier to remember that it is, indeed, about Him and not about me.
Favorite Quotes:
“Focusing on ourselves will never reveal our life’s purpose.” p. 18
“You were made by God and for God – and until you understand that, life will never make sense.” p.18
“You were made for God, not vice versa, and life is about letting God use you for His purposes, not your using Him for your own purpose.” p.18
Question for further discussion:
What do people get attached to on earth that keeps them from living for God’s purposes?
