26 MarWhen one egg wont stand, try another

eggYes, this is my egg standing on my counter. This is not a trick there are no supports, it’s standing all by itself.

You probably already know why – because it’s Spring! That awesome and curious time of year when it’s actually possible for an egg to stand on its own.  I don’t exactly understand how, something about the equilibrium – or equal alignment of the earth right now – I think it’s also possible in the Fall (although I’ve never tried it then).

Anyway, every year on the first day of Spring I feel compelled to attempt to stand my egg (my kids love it! …okay, I love it, too) but this year I didn’t have any eggs. (I hate grocery shopping so we run out of things often.) I didn’t get any until yesterday, and I thought it was too late.  But I just had to try. Just to see if it would work.

I secretly tried for several minutes. I didn’t tell my kids because I didn’t want them to be disappointed if I couldn’t do it this time.  But kept at it for so long that my oldest son finally walked in. I thought he was going to give me a crazy look and laugh at me for being a persistent weirdo, but he didn’t. He actually got excited that I was trying and curiously looked on.

But it wasn’t happening.

I decided to take a moment to examine the egg I had, and I realized it had a slight bump on the bottom, right in the place where it needed to balance. So I picked another egg.  It didn’t work, so I picked another and it only took me a few seconds of trying before it stood stably on its own.

You would’ve thought I won the lottery! Both me and my son cheered and pulled out our cell phones to take pictures (hence this pic) and called to everyone in the house.  “The egg is standing!”

My daughter came in and looked at it for a few seconds before blowing it over.

You’re probably wondering what this has to do with anything. Firstly, when I asked my seventeen year-old son why this made him and everyone in my family so happy, he explained that it reminded him of being a kid. He remembers watching me do something that seemed like magic.  Of course, now that he’s almost grown, he understands that it’s not magic, but it still gives him this nostalgic feeling – this feeling that anything is possible.

That feeling that anything is possible is what compels me to do it every year.  I see it as God’s tangible evidence that yes, anything can be done – because He has planned this world so perfectly. But the problem comes when we are too impatient to wait for the impossible to manifest. I could’ve easily given up after the first few moments – after all the first day of Spring had passed and chances were slim anyway – either that or I could’ve decided to NOT even try at all.  Then when the second egg didn’t work, I could’ve concluded that it wasn’t going to happen, but I had to keep trying.  Then when my son came and cheered me on, it renewed my resolve a bit, and I was determined to do it then.

How many more blessings might we all see if we approached our challenges in life like this? What if we encouraged each other to press on like this? What if we came to realize just how important our actions are to our family and others who are looking up to us? Oh the possibilities we might see…

P.S. I don’t know exactly how many days of the Spring this works, but it’s not just the first day, it actually spans over a few days – I know this because one year we left an egg to stand for days until it finally just fell on its own. And yes, we threw it away after that! :)
