Questions to ask to get you started
Deciding what you’ll write for your newsletter should be based on the needs of your church. I start by asking some questions: What issues, concerns or problems are members dealing with? Do they need motivation, inspiration, or clarification? Are there repeating questions members continue to have? What issues did I contend with when I was a new member?
Once I’ve answered some of these questions, I then decide on a theme. A theme is a visually and textually unifying concept that is supported by the major parts of your newsletter. For example, your cover, the main article titles and pictures should contain some element of similiarity. It doesn’t have to be super intellectual or in-depth, just something to add a new level of engagement to the newsletter.
Themes can, but they don’t have to reflect the seasons. In fact, seasonal themes are very predictable and may not always be appropriate – for example if your church’s anniversary is coming up in July,it would seem a bit dismissive to use that holiday as a unifying theme.
. But it’s totally up to you whether or to use them. I like to chose themes based on a particular word or phrases, or I’ll base a theme off of a picture.
Just for the record, though, it’s okay not to have a theme. Do what works best for you.
Here are some ideas to help you get started with writing for your church newsletter
- Ask your pastor for guidance – there may be an immediate issue he or she would like you to address. Have a discussion and take notes.
- Interview various leaders within the church. Ask them questions about what they do for the church and what helped them decide to devote themselves to that particular ministry.
- Ask various members if they’d like to contribute inspirational poetry or if they’d like to write letter of thanks and encouragement to the Pastor or other leaders.
- Write about recent church events. Did your church have a recent anniversary banquet? Then write a brief article about the highlights of the event. Was someone there dressed extra special? Was the food especially tasty? Who did or said something that was funny?
- Write about recent events from the news. I subscribe to USA Faith & to stay up to date on Christian topics.
