How does God speak to you? He often whispers to me through my thoughts – usually at a time when I’m feeling as if what I’m doing is going nowhere. When I need it the most, He’ll whisper a word to me that’s a thousand times more encouraging than anything else anyone could ever say. It’s those words that propel me forward every day. I’m glad to share with you Part 2 of yesterday’s topic by LaVondilyn J. Watson.
Hearing His Voice Part 2 – How He Speaks to You
Have you ever wondered what believers mean when they say, “I heard the Lord speak…”? My younger sister sent me a text message recently asking me to clarify for her what that means when I say it. “Can you really hear His voice?” Her text message asked, incredulously. “Yes!” I answered, and then explained…
In St. John 14:26 Jesus says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit…will teach you all things…” and in St. John 16:13, He says, “when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth…and he will tell you things to come. He will glorify me: for he will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”
This promise is very real. Our Helper does indeed speak to us! He certainly can, and will, if you allow Him, guide you into all truth and show you things to come. If you allow Him to help you make decisions, to lead you where God wants you to go, to show you what’s good (and not so good) for you, you just might find yourself smack dab in the middle of God’s will for your life! (And, trust me, there is no better place to be!)
So like my sister, you may be wondering, “How does He speak? Can you really hear His voice?” Here are 5 ways the Holy Spirit speaks to us:
1. Through the Word of God – Have you ever read a passage of scripture that spoke volumes to you in your current circumstances? Perhaps you’d read that particular passage many times before, but this time, it hit home. Maybe it addressed a question you had recently been pondering or was an answer to your latest prayer – either way, the Word was right on time! God was speaking…
2. Through other people – God often uses others to deliver His messages to us. Perhaps you were uncertain of what to do in a situation and you prayed for God to show you, and soon after your pastor delivered a sermon that made your decision clear. Or a friend called and, without you asking, offered a solution – the same solution you strongly felt all along. Here’s a great example: a complete stranger walked up to me in the bookstore recently and said to me, “Ma’am, whatever you touch this year will prosper.” That morning, I had prayed for confirmation about an e-book coaching program I was launching that very day! God clearly spoke to me through that gentleman, whom I’d never met and haven’t seen since…
3. Through dreams and visions – There are countless Bible stories that tell us that that God speaks through our dreams and visions -see Genesis 40, Daniel 2, Matthew 1, to name just a few. I’ve had numerous dreams that have prepared me for a future occurrence. Pay attention to your dreams, specifically those you clearly remember – those that seem quite vivid and real – it could very well be that the Holy spirit is showing you things to come…
4. Through Circumstances – I’m a true believer that “things happen for a reason.” Nothing in this life is by chance! Perhaps you really needed help with a very specific situation and you just happen to be introduced to someone with that particular expertise. Coincidence? I think not. Or perhaps God has been telling you to deal with a problem in your life and, now everywhere you turn, that “problem” resurfaces. In situations like this, I say “Lord I hear you loud and clear!” He’s speaks through circumstances!
5. Through your thoughts – Sometimes God will communicate through thoughts that clearly are not your own. For instance, a verse of scripture will come to your mind when you need it most, or perhaps the lyrics of a song will play in your mind, or maybe a prayer will come to you for someone else. You know when it’s the Holy Spirit because the timing is perfect and the language may not be your own. I typically read the King James Version of the Bible, so when these thoughts come to me, it’s in Old English – clearly not my vernacular. These “promptings” may be for you or for someone else, so pay attention to them!
God can, and will speak to you, if you take the time to listen! He’s speaking in many different ways. His desire is to shape your life and lead you directly into His will for you, and he uses the Helper to do it. Allow Him to take the scattered pieces of your puzzle and strategically place them in order to manifest the complete picture on the cover of the box! He has a “big picture” already planned for your life. Listen for His voice and let Him guide you to it. Yes, He does speak! And yes, you can really hear His voice!

My Pastor begun a series on this topic, same day 1/31/10. Lord, Is that You?
I’m glad you started with number 1 because so many of us bypass that important step when everything we need is there.

I’m glad you stopped by – I felt the very same way when I read that article by LaVondilyn Watson, I honestly have some notes with some of the same words. It’s as if He’s trying to remind me to listen… I’m listening. Thanks again, I hope to see you around here again soon.
