I was reading a segment on USA Today’s Faith & Reason, “Is Twitter a Spiritual Discipline?” This title shouted out to me because it’s such an odd pair, yet most of the time that I’m on Twitter, it’s to connect with my Christian followers. The post ended with the question: Do you post spiritual tweets? How do you define “spiritual”?
I’ve been amazed by the volume of spiritual, and define spiritual as Christian, soley because I’m Christian. I’m keenly aware of the fact that others will define it differently, and that’s okay.
I’ve been joyfully discovering thousands of people who use both Twitter and Facebook as a ministry/mission – and I think that says something powerful about the way we use technology, which was once feared by religious leaders, to virally and contagiously spread the word about our faith.
Yes, I post Christian tweets – and I don’t apologize for it. I’ve got a wide range of followers – many who are Christians, but many others also. I post tweets about technology, blogging, and marketing, too. I used to worry that those who were there for the blogging/marketing tweets would be offended by my Christian tweets to the point that I considered getting two accounts. But if one Tweeter can post a tweet about running out of toilet paper, and still have followers, then I could still post tweets about my faith as well.
Do you feel as if Twitter is opening up new ways for people to nourish their spirit, or is it just another distraction?
