I was reading The Spirit is alive and well in Haiti (USA Today Online) – an article by Jim Michaels talking about how revivalist meetings of various religions are popping up all over the tent cities. They gather every night to worship and lift the people’s moral. The breathtaking part of the article that caught my attention was a quote by Roman Catholic priest, Yves Gerald Richemond, who tells how a friend of his, who was an atheist, said, “God Saved me.”
This quote immediately reminded of just how well God works things out for our good.
It may not be good as it is happening, but in fact, the most devastating events are the ones that bring us closer to God. The people of Haiti are going to rebuild their city, but perhaps now those who hadn’t embraced God before will now begin rebuilding both physically and spiritually with Him in mind. God can use even the most horrific earthquake to bring His people closer to Him.
When you see people changing their lives for the better as a result of traumatic events, it lessons the impact and reminds us that nothing happens in vain, but instead for a reason. God is still and always will be, in control.

It always seems around times of disaster that people turn to God. Whether they are already believers or not. Something about tradegdy that makes people have a bit more faith.

You’re right. I think it’s because when everything is stripped away, that’s when we realize God is all we really have to hold on to.
