Young people really do have so many options these days when it comes to Christian music. No longer can we complain that Gospel or spiritual music sounds “old.” While our grandparents’ and parents’ music definitely still is an important and respected influence in our lives, we can no longer give that as an excuse for not listening to positive, soul nourishing Christian music. The music we listen to has a greater influence on our lives than we realize. If we listen to negative or sad music, next thing we know, we start having negative or sad thoughts, when we listen to music that expresses violence and anger, guess what, we too can become angry. If we listen to music that promotes sex, drugs, or other sinful behavior…I think you know where I’m going here. If you are trying to change your life for the better, you have to surround yourself with positive music. You can’t listen to positive music and stay sad…you can’t listen to music that worships and praises God and keep a negative mood.
But let’s be honest, a lot of people don’t listen to gospel music because they think they have to listen to the same music their grandmother listens to, but today, thanks to brave people like Kirk Franklin (who decided to mix R&B music with Christian lyrics) there are now so many positive options for young people.
If you’re not in the mood to listen to music by groups like the Jackson Southenaires or various Mass Choirs, turn on some Mary Mary, Marvin Sapp, Yolanda Adams, or Martha Munizzi just to name a few. They bring us worship and praise songs with a new flavor. They show us that any kind of music can bring glory to God. These artists combine powerful Christian lyrics with music that makes you want to kick off our shoes, snap your fingers, praise dance, jump and shout. If you haven’t heard “Love Him Like I Do” ( Deitrick Haddon, Reuben Studdard, and Mary Mary) or “It’s Raining” from Deitrick Haddon’s Revealed, then you are missing out on some truly creative and radical praise. If you can sit still while listening to “Higher” on The Shekinah Glory Ministries Live CD then you need to check your pulse because you might be dead!
The internet has opened up an unlimited amount of choices. Itunes alone has a long list of Christian music in general, some are what I call “old school gospel”, but there are so many contemporary Christian stations as well. The next time you are on Itunes, try checking out their internet radio stations like “Ensound Radio”, “1.FM – Urban Gospel”, or “The Word 1100”. These stations play Gospel, Contemporary Christian, and even Christian Rap music. You don’t have to own an Ipod to download Itunes and the best part is that it is free! So go ahead and start your day out right with prayer and positive music – you’ll be surprised how much better your day will go.
